Jane looks up with inconsolable gloom. She’s been reading sections of the Bible in an attempt to escape the desolate cell and pass time. At the moment all the other girls are either talking in small groups or getting ready for bed. Jane has been in jail for a month. About two days ago she found the green Bible that currently rests in her lap. It had been pushed off the shelf and laid beyond the bars of her cage. She reached her thin arms through the bars and began reading from it. It is different than any Bible she’s read before. The stories have the same basic message as in other Bibles, but there is underlying meaning that gives the book more depth. Never in previous years can Jane remember a Bible that mentioned the words magick.
